The
Rose & Associates DHI Interpretation and Risk Analysis Consortium currently (July, 2011) consists of two groups of oil companies, Phase 7 with meetings held in Houston every three to four months, and our European DHI Consortium, with two-day meetings held approximately every four months at a location in Europe. 20 oil companies are members of the Consortium, eight companies in Phase 7 and 12 companies in the European group.
The overall Consortium Goals are to:
- Address seismic amplitude anomalies, the data behind the anomalies and their impact on prospect assessment.
- Design process improvements in the SAAM (Seismic Amplitude Analysis Module) software to characterize seismic amplitude anomalies in a consistent, systematic and thorough manner.
- Calibrate the assessments with documented occurrences of recoverable hydrocarbons in the subsurface and failures through prospect reviews. Prospect reviews are the highlight of the consortium meetings; members present prospect technical data and after detail discussion and risking by all members, the drilling result is disclosed. This is a great learning experience for all. The prospect information, including recognizing the discussion and questions by consortium members, is input into the SAAM prospect database.
During the past ten years, the Consortium, under the leadership of R&A consultants Mike Forrest and Rocky Roden with software support by Roger Holeywell, has built a seismic amplitude anomaly interpretation and risk analysis software called SAAM (Seismic Amplitude Analysis Module). The software can be used to help interpret and risk amplitude anomalies from all AVO Classes. Over 200 prospects are currently in the software database for analysis and to help calibrate the weighting factors of the data quality and anomaly characteristics.

Rose & Associates thanks the approximately 40 oil companies who have participated in the DHI Consortium during at least one phase over the past ten years.
1. What is the cost to join the Phase 7/European DHI Consortium?
- The Phase 7/European 3 Consortium fee is $35,000 plus new members must purchase SAAM software (final product of Phase 6/Europe of the Consortium). Each phase of the consortium is 12 to 15 months duration – the Phase 7/Europe consortium ends in the first quarter of 2012.
- Software license fee is based on annual production (or equivalent) of oil company: ranges from $30,000 to $5000.
2. Can I purchase SAAM software separate from joining the consortium?
- Yes – at a cost based on oil company annual production (or equivalent). The prospect database is not included in software sales outside the Consortium. There is no maintenance fee - SAAM maintenance and upgrades are done in the Consortium.
